A Modern Buddhist Bible: Essential Readings from East and West by Lopez, Donald S., Jr.,

A Modern Buddhist Bible: Essential Readings from East and West by Lopez, Donald S., Jr.,
The first book to bring together the key texts of modern Buddhism In the last hundred years, the world, especially the West, has increasingly embraced the teachings of Buddhism. A Modern Buddhist Bible is the first anthology to bring together the writings from Buddhists, both Eastern and Western, that have redefined Buddhism for our era. Forging a universal doctrine from the divergent traditions of China, Sri Lanka, Japan, Burma, Thailand, and Tibet, the makers of modern Buddhism saw it as a return to the origin, as renowned scholar Donald Lopez shows. Modern Buddhism is for them a homeward journey to the vision of Buddha himself. Putting far more stress on meditation and spirituality than on ritual and relics, it embraces the ordination of women and values of science, social justice, tolerance, and individual freedom. A Modern Buddhist Bible includes writing by Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, the Dalai Lama, Thich Nhat Hanh, T"ai Hsu, Cheng Yen, Shaku Soen, D. T. Suzuki, Alan Watts, Gary Snyder, Shunryu Suzuki, and others who have played a role in the rich and complex movement that fused Eastern insight with Western consciousness. Donald S. Lopez, Jr. is professor of Buddhist and Tibetan studies at the University of Michigan. His most recent books are The Story of Buddhism: A Concise Guide to Its History and Teachings and Prisoners of Shangri-La.

Under the Soviet Shadow: The Yining Incident : Ethnic Conflicts and International Rivalry in Xinjiang, 1944-1949 by David D. Wang,
In 1944, Moslems in Yili, Xinjiang, rose up in rebellion against the Guomindang (GMD or KMT) and established the Eastern Turkestan Republic (ETR). The ETR lasted until 1949 when it rejoined China as part of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) regime. Sparking intense separatist feelings in the region for years, today the ETR in Yili is regarded as a dynamic symbol of the East Turkestan Independence movement. A better understanding of the events between 1944-1949 in Xinjiang enables us to explain the ongoing Uygur separatist movement. This study explores the historical background of the ETR, examining the domestic and international politics from which the ETR emerged and analyzing accounts of Soviet participation in the republic. Detailed analysis highlights Xinjiang politics between 1944 and 1949 and explains how and why the CCP was able to take over Xinjiang peacefully in 1949. This book also illustrates the interlocking pattern of ethnic disputes, Chinese policy, foreign interference, and international rivalry in this complex event.David D. Wang was born in Beijing. He is a Research Fellow of the East Asian Institute at the National University of Singapore and a freelance writer.Distributed by the University of Michigan Press in Canada and the United States and its dependencies.
